The Russo brothers kept their promise and the trailer of Avengers: Infinity War, one of the biggest films of 2018 just dropped a few hours back and as expected, is trending on YouTube. Apart from being the largest assembly of superheroes seen on screen, the trailer also shows the arrival of one of the biggest baddies in the Marvel universe – Thanos who has teased us with cameos over the last six years. So what will Avengers: Infinity War have in store for us?
As expected, the film will be one of the biggest multi-starrers ever in the history of Hollywood with all the characters we loved over the last decade coming together for the first time. With these many characters, the trailer proves that the film will show them all to be split up and they’ll probably come together in the climax to take down the tyrant. As far as splitting up is concerned, I find them to be separated into three different groups.
The first group consists of Tony Stark (Iron Man), Doctor Strange, Peter Quill (Star-Lord), Gamora, Drax and Peter Parker (Spider-Man). The trailer starts with a voiceover of Gamora as she explains the rest, on who Thanos is and why he’s after the infinity gauntlet. We then get a shot of Thanos removing his helmet which itself reveals a lot considering that the first Super Bowl trailer didn’t have him wearing his signature armor helmet which left comic book fans unsatisfied. We later see a scene of a young Gamora holding hands with Thanos in what looks like a flashback scene where her home planet gets raided by Thanos and his army. Looking closely, it’s seen that other similarly green-skinned aliens are being kept at bay by the army. This correlates with the comic book origins of Gamora who is kidnapped as a child and then trained as a warrior by Thanos, only to be made as one of his daughters.
Talking about how strong Thanos is, there’s also a shot where he cracks open the tesseract with just his bare hands to get the Space Stone (Blue), which, Loki might’ve gifted Thanos. He also gets seems to have gotten the Power Stone (Purple) which was last seen in Guardians of the Galaxy being protected by Xandar’s Nova Corps. We’re not sure if he’ll get his hands on the Mind Stone (Yellow) which is in Vision’s forehead, the Reality Stone (Red) that’s with the Collector, the Time Stone (Green) that’s safe around Doctor Strange’s neck or the Soul Stone for which its whereabouts is unknown. We also get a glimpse of Thanos’ home planet Titan where a major fight seems to happen.
Getting back to the bigwigs of the first group, Tony seems to have gotten an upgrade to his suit which seems to be heavily inspired from the comics’ Mark 37 a.k.a the Bleeding Edge Armour which relies on fluid like nanomachines instead of panels that we’ve seen in earlier films. In a shot, his suits’ legs also transform into a launcher giving him more thrust as he follows a spaceship — thereby proving the adaptability of the new suit. In another scene, we see his suit wrecked and that adds more strength to this speculation. Talking about attire, Peter Parker is seen in his Iron Spider suit, something he rejected when Tony offered him at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Doctor Strange seems to have a hard time as we seem him have a face off with Ebony Maw (more on him later) and the former is tortured in what looks like shards from the mirror dimensions.
The second group seems to have stationed at Wakanda and along with the prince T’Challa (Black Panther) and his team, we see Steve Rogers (Captain America), Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), Bruce Banner (Hulk), Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier), Vision, James Rhodes (War Machine), Scarlet Witch and Sam Wilson (Falcon). Why Wakanda? Apart from the theory that it might be the home for the Soul Stone, the impenetrable defenses and technology make it a safe spot. Vision has to be protected at all cost as he’s the bearer of the Mind Stone. The Super Bowl trailer showed him to be sans the stone and still functioning and the hologram Shuri presents might explain how their technology saves Vision from collapsing. Scarlet Witch is also alongside Vision and she’s got a soft spot for him. Considering she’s one of the strongest players in this game, she should come handy in keeping Vision safe. Rhody who got himself paralyzed in Captain America: Civil War seems to be back on his feet thanks to Tony’s tech and we also have Black Widow and Banner together after a long time. A film of this magnitude can’t be about just action and witty humour. There’s always space for a romance angle.
We also see a new Hulkbuster but considering Tony is not in Wakanda, he might be remotely controlling it, or even better — operated by Banner. After all, in Thor: Ragnarok, it was revealed that Banner can’t be in Hulk’s form for a long time. But considering that he’ll eventually turn into Hulk, I hope there’s a scene where Banner loses his temper and bursts out of the Hulkbuster. Incidentally, there’s a scene where a bunch of Outriders (Thanos’ henchmen) takes the Hulkbuster down.
There’s also Cap with a new shield presented by T’Challa after he leaves the previous one in Captain America: Civil War after a showdown with Tony. Considering the shield is made with Vibranium, where else but Wakanda can he get more of the rare metal? Speaking of showdowns, the final leg of the trailer shows Thanos going one on one with Steve which is a beautiful homage to the comics where the ‘truth will triumph as long as the last good man stands tall’ is often symbolized religiously.
The third group, which isn’t shown too much in the trailer, is what I’m actually excited to watch on the big screen. This involves Thor, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. Post the events of Thor: Ragnarok, we know that Thor has lost his trusty hammer the Mjolnir and his right eye. But we see, in one scene, between flashes that he’s conspicuously holding on to something. This could very much be the Jarnbjorn — a battle axe, which he forges himself. As far as his missing eye is concerned, let’s not forget about the robotic eye Rocket possesses from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that Baby Groot stole from a Ravager and it also, fortunately, happens to be the right eye. Intergalactic eye transplant does sound cool!
As far as the baddies are concerned, Thanos isn’t the only reason for the Avengers to worry. They’ve also got their plates full thanks to The Black Order, referred to as the Children of Thanos. The characters, Proxima Midnight, Ebony Maw, Corvus Glaive and Black Dwarf are seen alongside Loki in a particular shot and I guess this is the scene where Loki hands Thanos the Space Stone.
The film’s runtime of 2 hours and 36 minutes makes it the longest ever from the franchise and with these many stars to light up the screen, the time given seems less. With stakes higher than before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we can be sure about one thing — the death of an Avenger. Who will it be? My bet’s on Cap.
